David de Gea’s leaked contract shows £66m deal which nearly happened with Real Madrid

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea would have earned £9.1million-a-year if his proposed contract with Real Madrid had been processed in time, according to Football Leaks.

The 25-year-old was set for a £22.9m transfer to the Bernabeu on the last day of the summer transfer window before the deal collapsed.

Had the paperwork been completed, De Gea would have received a signing fee of £8.4million and racked up €86,138,183 (£66.7m) over the course of six years.

Football Leaks previously published documents revealing Anthony Martial‘s contract for Man United and Gareth Bale’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to Madrid.

We all knew that Madrid would be able to offer big money to De Gea and that’s a staggering amount which is probably just as much to do with the fact he was only going to cost £22.9m than anything else.

If Madrid come hunting for De Gea again this summer, it will be a different matter altogether. Man United tied Dave down to a new long-term contract so if Madrid want to sign him they will have to go upwards of £40-50m for De Gea and need to offer him similar terms on a contract – that’s a lot of money for a goalkeeper but we all know he’s worth it.

I’m still resigned to the fact De Gea will be a Madrid player sooner rather than later but we at least had him for another season this year which is more than we all expected heading into last summer. Let’s see what happens after Euro 2016 but one thing is for sure – Madrid will have to pay an extortionate amount of money if they want to prise him away from Old Trafford now.
