Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata says there is no time to mourn the club’s disappointing season and must focus on winning the Europa League.
Louis van Gaal‘s side lost 2-1 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light over the weekend and failed to close the gap on the teams above them in the Premier league.
The Dutchman also recently claimed that the European tournament was Man United’s best bet for qualifying for the Champions League next season.
Mata insists dedication to the Europa League could come with a double reward for Man United.
Writing in his latest blog, Mata said: “First of all, our participation in the Europa League. I understand this is not the best possible situation, but it is what it is, and our goal is to keep advancing so we can have the chance to lift this trophy, which would come with a double reward.”
There’s no point being in a competition if you aren’t going to try and win it but so long as United don’t prioritise the Europa League ahead of the Premier League then it’s fine.
If we do, like van Gaal alluded to in his post-match press conference after losing 2-1 to Sunderland, then it’s pure madness to consider that a better opportunity for a Champions League spot next year than finishing in the top four.
