David Moyes was convinced Cesc Fabregas was joining Manchester United rather than Chelsea

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes was convinced Cesc Fabregas was joining the club during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

Reports suggested the Spaniard had agreed a deal with Moyes in the summer transfer window of 2013 but nothing materialised and he opted for a move to Chelsea the following year.

It was a waste of time for Man United which eventually saw us sign Marouane Fellaini on transfer deadline day instead and that failed deal sums up United in the last few windows.

“We thought we were taking him to Manchester United,” Moyes told Goals on Sunday.

“We spoke to him at the time, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

“Manchester United are always in for the top players, we were in for the top players at the time. They were in for the top players recently and they will be in for them again.”

Like plenty of other players, chasing the tail of Fabregas left United up the creek without a paddle (and Fellaini for more than his release clause which expired only a few weeks before we signed him).

Moyes and Woodward failed in their transfer market strategy quite spectacularly and it proved to be a prelude for what was to come during a terrible season.
