Given that Rooney stayed on for the full 90 minutes, it’s strange to hear he picked up his injury then and especially so when you consider it’s a serious knee ligament injury rather than a simple strain or muscle problem.
Speaking in his FC Midtjylland press conference, van Gaal said: “That’s also typical Wayne. He’s a guy who wants to go until the end and if he is feeling pain, he doesn’t want to go away, and certainly when you are drawing a match because he wants to win.
“That’s a fantastic attitude but also it’s bad for his body. You do not know when it happened, so that’s the difficulty.”
It sounds like Rooney carried on through the pain barrier when he should have come off and that now means we’re going to be without him for what is likely to be a couple of months.
I’ve slated Rooney plenty this season, deservedly so, but it’s a big blow for him to be ruled out for so long because he was in excellent form since the start of 2016.
We’ll have to deal without him but in a squad so thin, van Gaal has very limited options to choose from.
