Wayne Rooney says criticism directed at Louis van Gaal is down to Manchester United players

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney insists players have gotten off lightly whilst criticism has been directed at Louis van Gaal this season.

The Dutchman’s side have only won three of their last ten Premier League games and have fallen six points behind fourth placed Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford and has already told close friends it’s a ‘done deal‘.

Rooney insists the manager isn’t entirely to blame for Man United’s disappointing showings.

He said: “At times it’s been frustrating for us as we have under-performed. The manager has taken a lot of stick for some performances. It’s down to us, we’re players and we have to perform.

“In terms of that we have probably got off quite lightly and the manager has taken a lot of it.
