Harry Redknapp thinks Jose Mourinho will need to rip up Manchester United’s squad if he replaces Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.
The Dutchman has been heavily criticised by fans and former players due to a lack of consistency with results and his ‘dull play style.’
Mourinho has been widely reported as Van Gaal’s replacement after Bedy Moratti suggested the Portuguese manager would be moving to Manchester and Redknapp has had his say on what Jose would have do it if he arrived.
Speaking about United’s squad, he insists David de Gea is the only world-class player at Old Trafford.
He said: “Mourinho will need to tear it up and start again because there is no evidence of a team there any more. They are miles away from Manchester City, who have five or six fantastic players, and will probably add another three or four more when Pep Guardiola comes in over the summer.
“Apart from the goalkeeper, I can’t see any world-class players and if David de Gea decides to up sticks this summer then they will be in a right mess.”
There’s plenty of hyperbole in Redknapp’s comments – Martial’s been brilliant this year – but largely he’s right. United’s squad doesn’t have that sprinkle of world class quality throughout it in the same way it did even only a few years ago.
It’s because there’s been so much change at United both with the playing and management departures, and the fact things haven’t always worked out (see Angel di Maria).
While I don’t agree that Mourinho would have to tear it up and start again, he’d certainly have his job cut out to try and made our squad capable of challenging on all fronts within one the space of one summer.
