Manchester United fans critical of Memphis Depay following performance against Shrewsbury

Manchester United fans were disappointed with Memphis Depay‘s performance during the 3-0 FA Cup win at Shrewsbury on Monday night.

The Dutchman, who has failed to impress supporters since joining the club, garnered some praise after looking lively in the defeat to FC Midtjylland last Thursday.

He was, however, unable to impress supporters against the League One side:

As expected, Man United dominated possession throughout this tie against considerably weaker opposition. But the 22-year-old was, in spite of this, unable to assert himself on proceedings, looking tentative on the ball on too many occasions during the first period.

The second half, which saw the home side inevitably tire from perpetual chasing, was a different story for Memphis, who looked far more comfortable with the ball at his feet. He managed to set up several openings and, in general, was a far more composed character.

Such derision, then, is a bit unfair. As a player who thrives primarily on confidence, playing your debut season in England for a morale-sapped side was always going to prove difficult. United fans often forget that – probably because of the astronomical price-tag – Memphis is still very young, and is still learning – he will, in time, show the raw talent he so clearly possesses.
