Dean Henderson might not have played against Shrewsbury Town but he was still in dreamland and probably couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.
Injuries to David de Gea and Sam Johnstone, plus Joel Castro Pereira being ineligible to play, saw Louis van Gaal re-call Henderson from his loan spell at Stockport County to include him in the match day squad on Monday.
Henderson, 18, is highly unlikely to make his debut soon but the mere fact he was included in a match day squad is enough to give him a huge mental boost.
Having been at the club since he was 14, Henderson has worked his way through United’s academy teams and earned himself the No.1 spot for Nicky Butt’s U19s in this year’s UEFA Europa League before he was sent out on loan to Stockport County.
Something which will no doubt have helped develop is the fact he trained with Victor Valdes after he was banned from first-team activities. The World Cup and Champions League winning goalkeeper would have been a brilliant person for Henderson to look up to.
Henderson will now be using this match day experience as the fuel to drive him onwards as he’ll want to experience it again as soon as possible and that can only be a good thing.
