Chris Smalling and David de Gea both miss FC Midtjylland training

Chris Smalling and David de Gea were absent from training with Manchester United ahead of their Europa League fixture against FC Midtjylland.

Sky Sports are reporting that Smalling picked up a knock in Man United’s 3-0 FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town on Monday, plus De Gea’s absence after his injury in Denmark looks to have continued.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Will Keane also picked up injuries against Shrewsbury and were not at training today with the first-team, so there are still plenty of injury concerns for United.

Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia returned to training which is a boost but the big worry surrounds Smalling as he’s been so crucial at the heart of our defence this season. We should have enough to cope without De Gea for Midtjylland but Smalling is a different matter altogether.

If he is ruled out with an injury, we’ll have confirmation from Louis van Gaal later this afternoon, then Daley Blind could potentially be partnered by Paddy McNair. Either way, our thin is continuing to get stretched almost beyond its breaking point.
