Joel Castro Pereira trained with Manchester United this week ahead of FC Midtjylland and is likely to be named on the bench against FC Midtjylland.
The Portuguese goalkeeper would have been part of the match day squad for Shrewsbury Town on Monday but is ineligible for the competition, which is why Dean Henderson had to be recalled from his loan spell at Stockport County to cover Sergio Romero.
Having progressed very well over the last couple of years, the 19-year-old is very physically developed for his age and he’ll be itching at the opportunity of being part of United’s squad for Thursday. You never know, the way things are going with United right now, Romero could pick up an injury and give Pereira the No.1 gloves for the game but hopefully nothing will happen to Romero.
With David de Gea at the club, chances were always going to be tough for any youngster trying to break through but Pereira, like so many other academy players, has been presented with an opportunity through injury that he’ll want to grab with both hands – this time quite literally.
I’m a fan of Pereira’s style of goalkeeping and feel like he’s well developed, physically and mentally, for someone who is only 19, so I’d be confident if he had to be brought in against Midtjylland.
