The trio have all been sidelined for a variety of injuries and having three important first-team players returning to the squad would certainly boost Louis van Gaal‘s options.
Smalling’s absence in particular has affected the team because we’ve been playing Michael Carrick at centre-back, a position he is not suited to, so he’d be welcomed straight back into the starting XI.
“Players are coming back,” van Gaal told reporters this afternoon.
“It is positive. I think Martial can play, Darmian can play and maybe Smalling – we’ll wait and see for tomorrow.”

Some positive injury news? What is this sorcery?
The real question actually surrounds whether all three players would come back into the starting XI. Guillermo Varela was superb at right-back against Arsenal and it would be harsh to simply drop him for the returning Darmian, especially considering that’s already happened once this season.
Smalling is a no-brainer if fit but Marcus Rashford‘s four goals in two games surely makes him a shoe-horn to start whilst he’s in this sort of form? Does that mean Martial could play on the right to accommodate a front three alongside Memphis Depay and Rashford? It’s a tricky one.
Either way, after some substantial injury woes this season it’s just good to hear we’re getting multiple players back soon. That’s a real boost.
