Louis van Gaal coy on whether Marcus Rashford will start against Watford

Louis van Gaal has remained coy as to whether Marcus Rashford will start for Manchester United against Watford on Wednesday night.

Rashford’s first two starts brought four goals in five shots for Man United in what was one of the best starts to a career of any player the club has ever had, raising expectations on the 18-year-old’s shoulders.

There have been calls for Rashford to keep his spot in the team to face Watford and although van Gaal has made it clear he prefers to rotate to keep his players fresh, Martial is his only current option.

“You have to wait and see,” he said when asked whether Rashford would start.

“When I have choice enough, then I rotate. There’s no player in the English Premier League who can cope with the rhythm of matches. A player like Rooney could always cope but he is injured and not for the first time. So I have to rotate. I have Rooney, I have Martial, I have Rashford, I had Will Keane but Keane is injured and will be operated on. When I have more players, I will rotate.”

Using van Gaal’s same logic, Martial should start on the bench against Watford.

The only reason he picked up his injury in the FC Midtjylland warm-up was because of how many games he’d played this season, so he should be rested as much as possible ahead of the crucial upcoming games in March.

For me, Rashford simply has to start. Yes he’s 18 and yes he has played two games in the last seven days but when a goalscorer is on that sort of form, regardless of age, they simply need to play.

Form can be temporary if not nurtured in the right way and with Rashford on a hot streak, we should let him continue until the buzz dies down.
