Louis van Gaal was complimentary of Watford’s performance following Manchester United’s 1-0 win over The Hornets on Wednesday night.
Man United claimed a hard-fought win at Old Trafford, but it was the away side that were perhaps more deserving of the three points.
It was Quique Sanchez Flores’ men that pushed United throughout the game, creating numerous opportunities in front of goal while stopping the home side from breaking them down easily.
Speaking about how Watford performed, van Gaal said: “Watford played very well, they pressed very high up and we had difficulty with that.
“We gave a lot of chances away but, of course, it was because of their pressing, I cannot deny that. We still had our chances and I’m very pleased with this victory – it’s come at the right moment.”
Watford are currently positioned twelfth in the Premier League standings, and are just three points off the top half of the table. While they have shown no signs whatsoever of letting the foot off the gas, that is an achievement in its own right for a newly promoted side.
Lead goalscorer and Nigeria international Odion Ighalo already has fourteen Premier League goals to his name this season, although, on Wednesday, the 26-year-old saw a good chance scuffed off-target.
The main aim this season for The Hornets was undoubtedly Premier League safety, and they’re one win away from that 40 point milestone newly promoted sides look to achieve year after year. It looks unlikely that they will be caught but Sanchez Flores’ men should have no worries if they can continue to perform like they did against United on Wednesday night.
