Morgan Schneiderlin’s influence in Manchester United midfield continues against Watford

by Sam Peoples

Morgan Schneiderlin has had a growing influence in the middle of the park as of late and he continued his good form as Manchester United beat Watford 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The France international started alongside Ander Herrera in midfield, and put in an influential shift that consisted of a high passing percentage, a good interception tally and some important clearances. Juan Mata scored Man United’s only goal from a fantastically struck free-kick after 83 minutes of play.

While it could be argued that Watford were deserving of the lead an hour into the game, Schneiderlin did what was asked for him throughout.

Despite not being considered as a goalscorer by many, the 25-year-old had United’s best opportunity in the first half from a superbly executed volley sent inches wide. A glimpse at Schneiderlin’s stats during the game told you everything you need to know; 88% pass success rate, 1 shot on target, 4 interceptions and as many clearances.

Between side-stepping opponents in his own half of the pitch and switching long diagonal balls out wide to Guillermo Varela, this performance showcased Schneiderlin’s importance to this United side.

When United started ticking — especially once Marcus Rashford moved out right as Anthony Martial came more central — they hit Watford where it hurt with pace and width.
