Louis van Gaal: Manchester United’s squad is struggling with fitness

Louis van Gaal has admitted that a number of his Manchester United players are struggling in terms of their fitness.

Man United rode their luck at times against Watford on Wednesday but managed to snatch a 1-0 victory thanks to Juan Mata’s free-kick in the 83rd minute.

Van Gaal has had to contend with an injury crisis at the club as of late, with the likes of David de Gea, Anthony Martial and Marcos Rojo all spending time on the sidelines. The Dutchman insisted United are taking it “step by step”.

“We are fighting and we are struggling but, in the struggle, we can play fantastic matches,” van Gaal said.

“We have to go step by step. We have four wins in a row, fantastic, but we have a very small selection of players at the moment. When players are coming back, they are not fit enough. You saw how [Marcos] Rojo is struggling.”

In the absence of United’s more established stars, young players such as Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Marcus Rashford have made the step up in recent days and van Gaal’s side have secured some impressive results.

It has been fantastic to see but van Gaal will still be keen for his squad to reach full fitness ahead of what could be a crucial month for United in terms of their season.
