Guillermo Varela admits Manchester United’s busy schedule has left him exhausted

Guillermo Varela has revealed Manchester United’s hectic spell of fixtures has left him ‘over-tired’.

The full-back has made eight appearances for Man United this season and started in the club’s last four successive victories.

His excellent performances on the pitch have earned him a call up to the Uruguayan national squad for their upcoming games against Brazil and Peru.

However, Varela admits the extra games have been hard on his legs.

“Over-tired would be the best word [to describe how I’m feeling at the moment],” he said.

“It’s been very hard on my legs. Now, we have a recovery and recuperation period, we do very good work in that area, and let’s not forget we have an extra day of recovery ahead of this Sunday. Hopefully that will help us to find full form.”

We’ve had a hectic month but we’re heading into an even busier and more important one. With a double header against Liverpool in the Europa League, an FA Cup quarter-final against West Ham and an away game against Manchester City – all in the next two weeks – United’s squad is truly going to be stretched to the limits.

With that in mind, maybe Louis van Gaal will choose to rest Varela for West Brom on Sunday and bring Matteo Darmian back in. It would be a real shame to lose Varela because his form his been excellent but avoiding injuries is far more important at this stage of the season.
