Manchester United fans impressed with Chris Smalling despite defeat against West Bromwich Albion

Chris Smalling put in an encouraging display in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Smalling, making his return to the side following injury, had the better of West Brom’s Solomon Rondon during the first half at The Hawthorns despite Juan Mata’s early dismissal.

Rondon did strike in the second period to win it for the Baggies, but it was Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian who lost the imposing striker as he found space to score. Despite the result, Man United fans found solace in Smalling’s performance:

Smalling will be disappointed not to keep the clean sheet but he will be pleased with his own personal performance.

As United head into a crucial period in their season, they will need Smalling to make the step up and lead the side.

This has been a campaign to forget for United but Smalling’s performances have been a highlight for fans.
