Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has insisted his side are “confident” heading into the Europa League tie against Manchester United on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side came back from 1-0 down against Crystal Palace on Sunday to win 2-1 despite going a man down following James Milner’s dismissal.
Man United, meanwhile, had Juan Mata sent off early on against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns but they eventually succumbed to a 1-0 defeat thanks to Solomon Rondon’s strike. Lovren believes Liverpool can “beat everyone”.
“Are we confident against United? Yeah, definitely,” Lovren said.
“We haven’t had good results against United so we need to change things – it’s payback time! It is now just the mentality. I think that we can play against everyone. We respect everyone but we can also beat everyone.”
Louis van Gaal has an excellent record against Liverpool – he has won all of his games against them since taking charge in 2014 – and it will be interesting to see how the two sides set up at Anfield.
The Europa League now represents United’s only chance of securing Champions League football next term and it is crucial that they take away a positive result in the first leg at Anfield.
