Juan Mata: Manchester United can still beat Liverpool in the Europa League

Juan Mata believes Manchester United are capable of advancing to the next round of the Europa League despite the 2-0 loss against Liverpool on Thursday.

Man United were deservedly beaten at Anfield thanks to goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino.

The result has left them with an uphill battle ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford next week but Mata, who was handed the captain’s armband for the match, insisted that his side aren’t out of the tie yet.

“We never give up,” Mata said.

“We will try to start from the first minute and try to score. Last season I think we beat them 3-0, so we can do it. It’s going to be tough because they are a good team with a good manager, but we could do it with our fans at home.

“And then we come back in this Europa League competition, and try to do what they did to us, which is create the atmosphere and play with aggression and intensity. We have to do that next Thursday.”

Every week seems to be the same; United lose, and several players come out saying that they can ‘bounce back’ or that they must ‘move on’.

It’s time for United’s players to produce where it matters, on the pitch. Mata himself was anonymous for the majority of the clash at Anfield and his display was not becoming of a United captain.
