Schweinsteiger came on for the last 15 minutes at Old Trafford and his presence helped stop West Ham’s Darren Randolph from saving Anthony Martial’s late equaliser.
Aside from the goal, the German injected some quality into the middle of the park for Man United.
“I think he did fantastically,” van Gaal said.
“But, of course, he played 15 minutes. Ninety minutes is different but I was also happy with him.”
With Marouane Fellaini continuing to struggle at Old Trafford, Schweinsteiger’s return is a welcome one.
Things haven’t quite gone to plan for the former Bayern Munich midfielder this term but there is no doubt that United look a more composed unit whenever he is on the pitch. It remains to be seen if he will start against Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday. It’s safe to say that fans would rather see him in the starting XI than Fellaini.
