Louis van Gaal praises his Manchester United players after West Ham draw

Louis van Gaal has praised his Manchester United players after their performance in the 1-1 draw against West Ham United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Dutchman’s side managed to secure a replay after Anthony Martial scored late on to cancel out Dimitri Payet’s free-kick.

Man United have failed to win 21 of their last 34 games across all competitions and now face Liverpool on Thursday in the second leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie. Van Gaal insisted his team played well.

“My colleague Slaven [Bilic, West Ham boss] said the same, it was a fantastic match between two good sides and I am very happy that my team showed their spirit after a nasty week,” he said.

“I have to give a lot of compliments to my team. They were mentally tired after Liverpool and also in the body.”

A fantastic match? That couldn’t be any further away from the truth and it’s really starting to grind fans now. Van Gaal is verging on delusional.

United showed good character to get back into the match but the performance has to go down as an underwhelming one.

Old Trafford has traditionally been a fearsome place for teams to travel to but results have been all too easy for opposing teams to pick up in recent years. The one positive for United on Sunday was that they are still in the Cup.
