Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal confident of beating Liverpool

Louis van Gaal has insisted that he and his Manchester United players are confident of securing a positive result against Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday.

Man United suffered a demoralising 2-0 defeat at Anfield in the first leg thanks to goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino.

The result left United with an uphill task ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford but van Gaal believes his side can “make it”.

“We always owe the fans a big result because the fans pay to see that and we have to deliver,” van Gaal said.

“It’s much more important we beat Liverpool tomorrow. That is our aim. When we can do that with two goals difference and without conceding, then we have extra-time and, with our fans, we can make it.”

Ordinarily, Old Trafford would be a cauldron of noise as United look to overturn the deficit and record a memorable comeback.

However, van Gaal has zapped supporters of their optimism following some awful performances and results this term and there is little to suggest that United can make their way past Liverpool. That being said, form counts for nothing in these games and United will be looking to score early and take the game to their opponents.
