Manchester United boosted by Young, Varela and Borthwick-Jackson return

Manchester United have had a much needed injury boost ahead of Liverpool with the return of Ashley Young, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Guillermo Varela to training.

Young has been sidelined since January and it would be a real boost to have him back in action. We’ve really struggled with a consistent right-winger this season and as limited as he is, Young is excellent at skipping past his man and whipping in a good cross.

Borthwick-Jackson’s return would be particularly significant. He has been the best replacement at left-back since Luke Shaw‘s injury against PSV Eindhoven and his breakthrough game actually came away at Anfield, so he knows what it takes to play against them in a big match.

As for Varela, he should be starting on Thursday ahead of Matteo Darmian if he is fit. Yes there are fair concerns over his defensive positioning but on-form he’s much better than Darmian right now and I think that counts for a lot.

Louis van Gaal did say we would be getting lots of players back from injury in March and it now looks like we’re really starting to see the squad strengthen up.

While the return of Marouane Fellaini and Antonio Valencia didn’t really bother me, having Borthwick-Jackson and Young back is definitely good news.
