David de Gea: Manchester is red

David De Gea has expressed his delight following his side’s 1-0 win over Manchester City, insisting that “Manchester is red”.

The Spaniard has now kept a clean sheet in both Manchester derbies this season, and his remark comes after Louis van Gaal‘s side extended their unbeaten run against the noisy neighbours to three games.

Man United’s first win at the Ethiad in the post-Fergie era puts them level on points with West Ham and one point behind Manchester City, who lie in fourth place. De Gea took to Twitter to express his joy after the game:

For a man who has single handedly saved United from humiliation in recent weeks, De Gea had surprisingly little to worry about on Sunday.

He made a smart save with his feet to keep Jesus Navas at bay early on, but, aside from being generally tidy, that was largely the extent of his endeavours.

A lack of reliance on the 23-year-old is promising, however. The time when United’s goalkeeper was largely a peripheral figure is long gone – but performances like today evince memories of a happier time when Sir Alex’s side formed a slick, compact unit that dominated big games.
