Danny Murphy highlights ‘threat’ of Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford

Danny Murphy has praised Manchester United duo Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford following their performances in the 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Lingard lined up in the No.10 role behind Rashford at the Etihad, with the latter scoring the only goal of the game.

Considering that the pair have only broke through into the first team in recent months, it was encouraging to see. Murphy described the players as a “real threat”.

“He (Louis van Gaal) played Lingard in a No.10 role, with Rashford as a striker. They understood each other’s game and they were both a real threat,” Murphy said.

“(It was) a type of goal you expect to see from a striker of Aguero’s calibre. Every time they broke from deep it was Lingard who was playing with a freedom. They threatened in behind City.

“We’ve seen United not threaten teams in behind a lot this season but this certainly wasn’t the case against City.

“It was a risk that the manager played them both but a risk that was rewarded with superb performances.”

United have a host of established names in the squad, such as Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, but it was Lingard and Rashford, two players plucked from relative obscurity in the academy, who effectively won the game for their side on Sunday.

It has been fantastic to see a pair of homegrown players flourish in the first team and Louis van Gaal deserves credit for how he has handled them both.
