Raphael Varane has hinted that he is unhappy with a lack of game time at Real Madrid amid rumours that Manchester United are interested in signing him.
Varane was strongly linked with a move to Man United in 2011 but Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane reportedly convinced the Frenchman to make the switch to the Bernabeu.
Zidane is now manager of Madrid but Varane has still only started 18 La Liga games this season. The 22-year-old claimed that he is waiting to see how his situation “develops”.
“I would like to play every game. The coach knows what I want, but it’s up to him to make the decisions,” Varane said.
“I’ve spent five years playing with the best and I’ve never lost heart. without strength of character it’s impossible to stay at Real Madrid. It’s pointless making long-term plans in football. I’m happy in Madrid. I want to keep improving to go to the next level. We’ll see how my situation develops, but I’m not having any headaches over it anyway.”
Varane is one of the brightest young talents in world football and United would be wise to do all they can to sign him if he does become available.
Daley Blind has been playing at centre-back but it is clear that the Dutchman, a midfielder by trade, is not the long-term solution for United in the role.
