Marcus Rashford isn’t allowed to change in the first team dressing room at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground despite his rise to prominence this term, according to the Mirror’s Steve Bates.

Rashford, 18, has enjoyed a blistering start to his Man United career, scoring five goals in eight appearances since his debut for the club last month.

However, Louis van Gaal has insisted that he, and other youngsters who have impressed such as Guillermo Varela and Donald Love, must change in the U21 dressing room with their own age groups. Only then are they allowed to link up with the senior squad.

A source told Bates: ”Marcus still uses the U21 dressing room at Carrington but he’s not the only one. All the rest of the young players who have made their debut’s recently do the same.

“It’s the manager’s policy to leave them with their own age groups for now and it’s his decision when they are invited to change with the senior players at Carrington.”

It is the same situation at lunch as the young players are made to sit separate from the first team. Van Gaal, along with assistant Ryan Giggs, are keen to keep the youngster’s feet on the ground.

Another source added: “The coaches are keen none of the young players gets carried away just because they have made some first team appearances.

“They have to earn the right to make the next step up with the seniors. They all know the score and are happy with that. Staying with their own age group helps keep them grounded. They will get the call to the senior dressing room at Carrington when the manager and his coaches think the time is right.”

On the one hand, it is good that the young players at the club are reminded not to get too carried away with their success.

On the other, Rashford has earned the right to expect an elevated position within the squad. The policy seems to be working as Rashford has put in a number of top performances in recent weeks.
