Three players who Manchester United must sell this summer

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have spent upwards of £250m since Louis van Gaal took charge in 2014 but performances and results have been awful this season and there will likely be more upheaval in terms of personnel this summer.

This is doubly true when you consider that all signs are pointing to Jose Mourinho replacing van Gaal at Old Trafford at the end of the campaign. With that in mind, here are three players we think must be sold:

Marouane Fellaini

Fellaini has his uses – his physicality is sometimes useful against teams that sit back and make themselves hard to break down – but the Belgian is otherwise detrimental to United’s play.

United often resort to long-ball tactics when Fellaini is on the pitch and he is extremely limited in terms of his creativity and mobility. If United are to get back to their swashbuckling best, it is clear that there is no room for Fellaini in the side.

Phil Jones

Sir Alex Ferguson once said that there are similarities between Jones and Duncan Edwards and the 24-year-old has shown glimpses that he can become an accomplished defender.

However, Jones simply is not fit often enough, and for that reason he has to go. When you consider the way Chris Smalling has kicked on this term, Jones has lagged far behind and there is no use keeping him when he cannot even get himself on the pitch.

Adnan Januzaj

This is somewhat of a controversial one, as United fans are still holding onto the promise that Januzaj showed during his debut season at the club under David Moyes.

The youngster was superb during that campaign and he was a huge positive in what was otherwise a dour campaign. But has he reached anything approaching those levels since? Yes, he is just 21 years old and there is still plenty of time for him to fulfil his potential, but he failed to impress on loan at Borussia Dortmund and he has been eclipsed by the likes of Marcus Rashford and Timothy Fosu-Mensah this season. Add to that his rumoured attitude problems and there is certainly a case that Januzaj should be let go.
