River Plate interested in signing Sergio Romero

River Plate have confirmed that they are interested in signing Manchester United’s Sergio Romero.

Romero joined Man United in the summer and he initially started for Louis van Gaal’s side amid speculation surrounding David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford.

However, Romero has been used as backup since De Gea’s proposed move to Real Madrid broke down. River vice-president Matias Patanian admitted that they are keen on the Argentine.

“River is always interested in good players and Romero is one of them,” Patanian said.

“It’s true what he said about that we haven’t got in touch with him, but that is because we are waiting for our coach to tell us if he finally wants us to make an offer to Romero.

“In football you never know, what today is no, tomorrow is yes. I think that it can be interesting for him coming to River. We are the latest Copa Libertadores champions and we are willing to win that title again this year because we want to go back to Japan in December for trying to win the Fifa’s Club World Cup.”

Romero has looked nervy at points when he has featured this season but he has also pulled off some stunning saves.

In the first leg of United’s Europa League clash against FC Midtjylland earlier this term, Romero made a number of world-class stops in the absence of the injured De Gea. United lost 2-1 but it would have been much worse were it not for Romero’s efforts. It would be worth keeping him on at Old Trafford.
