Santiago Canizares believes that Manchester United’s David de Gea should be Spain’s No.1 keeper ahead of Iker Casillas.
De Gea is widely considered to be one of the finest goalkeepers in the world alongside Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer but he has often been overlooked by Spain coach Vincent Del Bosque.
De Gea impressed in Spain’s 1-1 draw against Italy last week, while Casillas was preferred for the stalemate against Romania on Sunday. Canizares, who worked with Casillas for Spain during his playing days, backed De Gea to establish himself as No.1 at the European Championships this summer.
“De Gea should have been Spain’s number one for a while now,” said Canizares.
“He has been far outperforming Casillas. I wouldn’t take him [to the European Championship] to be a substitute, but there’s no doubt that De Gea should be number one.”
Casillas is one of the most experienced and decorated players in world football having won a number of trophies at Real Madrid but a decline in his performances saw him move to Porto last year.
De Gea reportedly wanted to move to Madrid last summer to cement a spot as No.1 for Spain and perhaps becoming the first choice will convince him to stay at Man United in the long run. At least, that’s what fans will be hoping.
