Daley Blind: Wayne Rooney’s England place ‘shouldn’t be in question’

Daley Blind has insisted that Wayne Rooney is a “very special player” amid suggestions that the 30-year-old should not be included in Roy Hodgson’s England side.

England beat Germany 3-2 in a friendly last week without Rooney and there have been subsequent suggestions that there is no room for him in the side.

However, Blind, who will captain the Netherlands against England on Tuesday, insisted Rooney still has a lot to offer the national side.

“If a player like Wayne Rooney is fit, he is a very special player and can make any team in the world better,” Blind said.

“He has exceptional qualities, and I think his place in the England team shouldn’t be in question.”

Rooney certainly has the pedigree and experience but there is no doubt that he faces a fight to get back into the England side in the face of competition from Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane, who are in excellent form.

At club level, too, Rooney will have to work hard to displace the impressive Marcus Rashford up top for Louis van Gaal’s side.
