Memphis Depay continues to play within himself in Netherlands win over England

Memphis Depay‘s performance for the Netherlands against England was somewhat uneventful and therein lies the problem with the Dutchman.

Aside from fleeting moments of individual technique, Memphis was somewhat invisible against England and certainly a shadow of the man we signed from PSV Eindhoven.

Manchester United fans have seen Memphis play like that too often and clearly it’s not just something he does with his club:

Of all the reaction, I think it was a post-match comment from the Daily Mail’s Ian Ladyman which summed up his performance:

We’ve seen that a lot this season from Memphis, a real lack application and the wrong sort of attitude. He could be doing so much more just with the amount of running he does and the willingness he shows to get involved. You can only get a good goalscoring chance by being in the right position and a lot of the times, especially towards the tail end of games, Memphis isn’t.

When you see how he played against FC Midtjylland, it makes it all the more frustrating that he doesn’t have that sort of approach and attitude to every game. If he did, he’d be going toe-to-toe with Antony Martial but right now he’s in his shadows when most expected it to be the other way around.

I’m still certain that Memphis will come good and I really hope he uses this summer away from Euro 2016 to really knuckle down, work hard and put himself in the best possible position to make next year when he shines.
