Wayne Rooney hopeful of returning to full training within two weeks

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is hoping to return to full training within the “next week or 10 days”.

Rooney has been sidelined since February after sustaining damage to ligaments in his knee in the 2-1 defeat against Sunderland.

Marcus Rashford has impressed for Man United in Rooney’s absence but Louis van Gaal will be keen for his captain to get back to action as soon as possible. The player himself insisted he is close to a return.

“Hopefully, I think if everything goes to plan, I am back outside running now, then I will hope to be back in full training within the next week or 10 days so I am not too far away,” Rooney said.

Rooney’s place in the starting XI for both United and England has been scrutinised as Rashford has taken his chance at Old Trafford while Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane are impressing for the national side.

The 30-year-old undoubtedly has a fight on his hands to get back in the fold but, as one of the most experienced players in both squads, Rooney will have a say in United’s run-in as well as the European Championships this summer.
