Teddy Sheringham: David de Gea is the only player performing for Man United

Teddy Sheringham has criticised Louis van Gaal, insisting he has failed to motivate his players and that David de Gea is the only member of the squad to have played to his potential this season.

Van Gaal has come under pressure at Man United this term having overseen a run of awful performances and results over the course of the campaign.

It has been a campaign to forget for supporters but De Gea has been a standout performer for United and the situation would be a lot worse were it not for his efforts. Sheringham, who won a number of trophies during his playing days at Old Trafford, believes that van Gaal has to take responsibility for the lack of performers in the squad.

“You have to look at who has played well for Manchester United. Van Gaal’s job is to make the players play to the best of their capabilities,” Sheringham said.

David de Gea is probably the only one performing to his potential, and that’s not good for a football club that your goalkeeper is the only one doing that. It has to mean you are doing something wrong.”

Sheringham is absolutely right; aside from De Gea, Chris Smalling and Anthony Martial, the majority of United’s squad have largely underwhelmed over the course of the campaign.

Van Gaal’s negative tactics and lack of ability to motivate his players has resulted in a downturn in performances and the Dutchman must take the blame. It is clear that he must go in the summer.
