Here’s what Louis van Gaal had to say in his press conference ahead of Everton this weekend.
Van Gaal has confirmed Luke Shaw will return to Manchester United’s training sessions on Monday. The 20-year-old has spent the majority of this season on the sidelines after suffering a double leg break against PSV Eindhoven in September but is now taking a major step ajead in his rehabilitation.
The Dutchman is upset for Bastian Schweinsteiger after he suffered another tragic injury which puts his place in Germany’s Euro 2016 squad at doubt. That effectively confirms Schweinsteiger is going to miss the rest of the season for Man United and is the latest in a string of injuries in what has been a frustratingly stop-start campaign for him since joining from Bayern Munich.
Wayne Rooney is back training with the ball at Man United but van Gaal expects him to play with the U21s before returning to action with the first-team. The Englishman has been out of action since injuring himself in the 2-1 loss away to Sunderland and is keen to get back into action in order to make himself fit and available for England’s Euro 2016 campaign this summer.
Lastly, Man United manager van Gaal believes his team are still capable of finishing in in the top four this season. United are still in the FA Cup as they face West Ham in the replay on 13 April and have a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League if they can beat Everton at Old Trafford this weekend.
