Andrea Pirlo is amazed Manchester United let Paul Pogba leave the club and says he was the best young player he’s ever seen in training.
Sir Alex Ferguson blamed Pogba’s agent for his surprise departure in 2012 but fans have watched him grow into a genuinely world-class player in an extremely short space of time.
Reports have linked Pogba with a move away from the Italian side this summer, even though Mino Raiola recently revealed he was ready to sign a new contract, and Pirlo can’t get his head around why he was allowed to leave.
“I have played with some great young players, but Pogba was the best young player I have ever seen,” he added.
“We saw from his first training session with Juventus that he was special. There was a disbelief among the senior players that Manchester United had allowed him to leave.”
Sir Alex’s mantra of control and maintaining that no player was bigger than the club, Wayne Rooney aside, was the reason behind his departure. He feared giving Pogba the wage demands he had would set a dangerous precedent which other youngsters might follow, thus causing bigger issues throughout the academy.
I wholeheartedly agree that is a smart thought process but with a player like Pogba exceptions have to be made. Sir Alex should have known he was worth it, especially if his talent was so abundantly obvious from the first training session at Juventus.
The Frenchman’s departure was certainly one of Sir Alex’s biggest mistakes during his career and aged just 23 still, Pogba is only going to continue getting better and better.
