Chris Smalling: Louis van Gaal told Manchester United to be ‘patient’

Chris Smalling has revealed that Louis van Gaal told his Manchester United players to be “patient” at half time in the 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday.

The score was goalless at half time following a meek display from both sides at Old Trafford but Man United eventually secured the win thanks to Anthony Martial’s second half strike.

The result meant United kept pace in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League and Smalling insisted that his side deserved the win.

“The first half we controlled it. In the second half, it did get a little bit scrappy, but we defended well and showed good character. The manager told us to be patient at half-time,” he said.

It wasn’t the best performance of United’s season but, at this stage of the season, results are all that matter and they got exactly that against Everton.

A clash against Tottenham Hotspur awaits United next weekend and a positive result against Mauricio Pochettino’s side would really lay down a marker for their ambitions to finish in the top four.
