Ashley Fletcher wins Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with Barnsley

Manchester United’s on-loan striker Ashley Fletcher enjoyed delight at Wembley this weekend by winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with Barnsley.

Fletcher, 20, started for Barnsley and played a crucial role in their 3-2 win by scoring Barnsley’s second goal.

While Man United aren’t looking likely to lift any silverware this season, it’s good to see Fletcher thriving on loan and grabbing himself a goal at Wembley in a cup final, a memory he is unlikely to ever forget.

That feeling when you bag at Wembley…

After the full-time whistle, Fletcher shared a picture of him alongside the JPT cup in Wembley’s dressing room:

In terms of what lies ahead for Fletcher at United, I can’t see much of a long-term future for him at the club. Two years younger than Fletcher, Marcus Rashford has now started nine consecutive games for United and is a staple member of our first-team squad, so Fletcher is going to find it almost impossible to get an opportunity as we’re going to bring in new strikers this summer as well as having James Wilson and Will Keane back.

Just like so many other players before him though, I’d expect Fletcher to leave United and go on to have an excellent future somewhere else in the football league but for the time being, it’s good to see somebody from United’s squad lift some silverware even if it’s not the first-team.
