Louis van Gaal: Marcos Rojo was jet lagged against Everton

Louis van Gaal has insisted Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo had a problem with jetlag in their 1-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford this weekend.

Anthony Martial‘s 54th-minute goal was assisted by Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who came on for Rojo in the second half after what was a terrible 45 minutes from the Argentinian.

The 26-year-old had a tough time in the first half particularly whilst he was up against Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu and van Gaal believes Rojo’s international duty with Argentina left him tired. Speaking about him, he said: “I think [Marcos] Rojo had a problem with his jet-lag, so I changed him. He came back [from international duty] on Thursday but I had to play him.”

Whatever Rojo was suffering from, he was terrible against Everton and did himself absolutely no favours after what has been a bad week for him following the release of a video of him smoking a cigarette outside a club in Argentina.

I’m really not sold on Rojo at all. He is terribly indisciplined at left-back and were it not from an excellent Daley Blind, Everton would have had plenty of goalscoring chances from their ventures down that flank.

Does he have a long-term future at United? I don’t think so and if I’m honest, Timothy Fosu-Mensah at left-back sounds far more appealing between now and the end of the season than Rojo.
