Jamie Redknapp: Opponents are ‘petrified’ of Anthony Martial

Jamie Redknapp believes Anthony Martial is striking fear into opponents following his performances for Manchester United this season.

Martial has been a revelation for Man United since the club decided to pay an initial £36m for him in the summer.

The Frenchman took his goalscoring tally to 13 in all competitions this term following his winner in the 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday and Redknapp praised Martial for his “fearless” style of play.

“In the last 20 years, Manchester United have had so many players who you were scared to play against. They may not have too many of them now, but Anthony Martial is certainly one,” Redknapp wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“In a nondescript season under Louis van Gaal, he is the one player who can do something special. Martial is only 20 but he is fearless and when he runs at defenders, they are petrified of him.

“He is United’s top scorer in the league with eight and although his strike against Everton was only a tap-in, it’s these goals he needs to score more often. People questioned his £58m transfer fee but he’s been United’s glimmer of hope — and is proving to be worth every penny.”

Performances and results have been subpar for the majority of the campaign under Louis van Gaal but Martial has been a consistent and reliable performer for United.

At just 20 years old, the sky really is the limit in terms of what Martial can achieve and his fee is looking more and more like a bargain with every passing game. Players such as Martial, Marcus Rashford and Timothy Fosu-Mensah have given fans cause for optimism moving forward.
