Jesse Lingard believes he is capable of making the No.10 position his own at Manchester United.
Lingard played in the position in the 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday having impressed there against Manchester City last time out.
The 23-year-old has proven to be industrious and workmanlike at No.10 while the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial provide the ‘spark’ for Louis van Gaal’s side. Lingard insisted he is warming to the role.
“I’ve always liked the No.10 position,” Lingard said.
“You can get on the ball a lot more and attempt to dictate the play a lot more. You are definitely more involved defensively and, obviously, attacking wise, too. I think it’s more like a free role [than any other] nowadays but you can go anywhere to try to make things happen and create things. That’s the main idea but obviously you’ve still got to defend.”
Lingard isn’t the most creative of players but his earnestness and intelligence can give him an edge over opponents.
Louis van Gaal has played a number of players at No.10 over the course of the campaign, Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Ander Herrera to name a few – but he seems to have found the right balance with Lingard there. The Englishman will be looking to feature once again against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
