Louis van Gaal and Ryan Giggs were both in Old Trafford on Monday night watching Manchester United’s U21s in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
There were a host of first-team players in action including Ashley Young and Phil Jones who were both making their return to from injury as well as the forgotten man Andreas Pereira and Guillermo Varela who was dropped from the squad to face Everton this weekend.

The stand-out performer on the night was Young who showed plenty of energy in an unorthodox striker’s role whereas Pereira unfortunately let the game pass him by in what was a performance akin to his days before he broke through into the senior team.
Borthwick-Jackson getting some minutes under his belt will certainly help his fitness and with Marcos Rojo putting in a terrible performance against Everton we are certainly in need of some fresh legs at left-back, although Timothy Fosu-Mensah might slip in there.
Paddy McNair also played and was given Man of the Match by our resident U21s writer Tracey Germaine.
Overall, it wasn’t a barnstorming U21s performance which van Gaal and Giggs saw but with seven defenders in the starting XI, it was far from surprising.
