Wayne Rooney could return against Tottenham Hotspur – report

Wayne Rooney has an outside chance of featuring in Manchester United’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford this Sunday, according to The Telegraph.

Rooney has been sidelined since February having picked up knee ligament damage against Sunderland.

The 30-year-old, who has started running this week, will undergo another scan in the coming days and there is a chance he could play a part against Spurs.

Rooney has enjoyed a better than expected recovery from the injury but he will take no chances with his fitness ahead of the European Championships this summer.

It would be good to see Rooney start against Spurs but it is more likely that he will play for the U21s before making his comeback.

Ashley Young and Phil Jones played for the second-string side against Chelsea this week and Rooney may have to do the same. Having him back in the squad will be a big boost as United approach the final part of the campaign and Louis van Gaal will not want to rush him.
