Brazil forward Lucas Moura has admitted that he thought he was joining Manchester United before Paris Saint-Germain made a late move to sign him in 2012.
Lucas was strongly linked with a move to Man United in the summer of 2012 and there were rumours that the club had made a £30m bid.
However, PSG’s director of football, Leonardo, made a late call to Lucas to persuade him to move to France.
“Suddenly I had to make a choice when I thought I was joining Manchester United,” Lucas said.
“It nearly happened but, at the last minute, Leonardo called me and spoke to me and my parents.
“It was a very difficult moment because suddenly I had to make a choice when I thought I was joining Manchester United.
“I thought about it a lot; I talked about it with my family and I made my choice. Football is like that. You have to choose a team.”
Unfortunately, Lucas became one of a number of ‘what ifs’ as far as United are concerned.
The club were reportedly close to signing the likes of Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, Ronaldinho and Arturo Vidal in recent years before they all moved elsewhere. United’s transfer business has been underwhelming recently and they will need to improve the situation in the future.
