Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia has revealed that he is “overjoyed” to be back to full fitness following a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Valencia underwent surgery on an ankle injury last year which kept him out of action for five months.

The Ecuadorian has returned to first team affairs in recent weeks, making a handful of cameo appearances from the substitute’s bench. Valencia admitted he is delighted to be back in the fold.

“I’m really keen to play. After five months out of action, I’m happy with the way the operation went and overjoyed to be back and available,” Valencia said.

“I’m fully recovered and, when I play, it’s very important for me to perform well to show how much I like being here and how much I love this team.”

Valencia has sometimes attracted criticism from Man United supporters but his pace and power is a valuable tool and it is good to have him back.

Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney, too, are all returning to full fitness and van Gaal will be happy to have his squad approaching full-strength ahead of what is a crucial run-in.
