Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United can still finish in the top four this season

Louis van Gaal has insisted that Manchester United are still in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League despite the 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Man United suffered a six minute collapse in the second half at White Hart Lane as goals from Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela sealed victory for Spurs.

The result left United fifth in the league table, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. Van Gaal believes United are still in the hunt but conceded that it will be tough to secure Champions League qualification.

“Every team can lose to everybody so we are still in the race but, of course, when you lose a game you have to close the gap again and that is difficult,” van Gaal said.

United have been awful for the majority of the campaign and at no point have they looked convincingly good enough to finish in the top four.

Van Gaal has spent a huge amount of money since his arrival at United in 2014 but, if anything, the club has gone backwards. It is remarkable that the Dutchman has survived this long and he must surely leave Old Trafford in the summer.
