Wayne Rooney plays hour on Manchester United return from injury

Wayne Rooney played 60 minutes on his return for Manchester United’s U21s tonight in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old’s performance was somewhat muted which I suppose is what you can expect for a player who has been out of action for two months. Rooney tried the occasional diagonal pass as he always does and tried to hit the target with a few shots but they were all quite wayward.

He went straight down the tunnel after being taken off but that was probably more of a planned move rather than anything to do with an injury. Here’s some thoughts of a few fans on how Rooney played:

As is always the case with Rooney, it’s going to take him a few games to get back to match fitness and rhythm and that doesn’t leave him with a whole lot of time to have any sort of influence on the end of our season. That being said, Marcus Rashford is definitely in need of a well needed rest, or at least some sort of rotation with somebody else, because he’s started nine consecutive games now.

Is Rooney being back in the squad a good thing? That’s up for debate but we’ll soon see if he can make a difference in the coming weeks.
