Graeme Souness: David de Gea has been Man United’s ‘key’ player this season

Graeme Souness believes that David de Gea has been Manchester United’s “key player” this season.

De Gea has been in excellent form over the course of the campaign and Man United’s good defensive record this term is mainly down to him.

However, De Gea could do little about the 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Souness included De Gea in his Premier League team of the year and lavished praise on the Spaniard.

He wrote: “David De Gea is my goalkeeper. Once again, he has been Manchester United’s key player. When you consider their top league scorer is Anthony Martial with eight goals, it’s clear they have won their points at the other end of the pitch. How many has De Gea won?

De Gea came close to signing for Real Madrid last summer but a deal collapsed due to late paperwork. It is good for United that it did.

The situation for Louis van Gaal’s side is looking bleak but it would have been a lot worse had it not been for the efforts of De Gea. There is an argument that he is United’s only world-class player and it is crucial that the club keep a hold of him.
