Louis van Gaal: Manchester United must have better communication to control Andy Carroll

Louis van Gaal wants his Manchester United players to communicate better in order to deal with the threat of West Ham United’s Andy Carroll for Wednesday night’s FA Cup clash.

Man United lost 3-0 against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and van Gaal blamed the goals on poor communication between centre-backs Chris Smalling and Daley Blind. Meanwhile, Carroll scored a hat-trick in West Ham’s 3-3 draw against Arsenal last time out.

Speaking about the West Ham striker, van Gaal went as far as to say he believed Carroll possesses “special qualities”.

“I have seen ‘The Andy Carroll Show’ and I think our problem [at Spurs] was the miscommunication of our central defenders,” van Gaal said.

“So I hope that we will improve our communication because this is a very important game for us. It is the last chance of a title, so it is very important for the players, club, manager, fans.”

When asked about Carroll, van Gaal added: “He has special qualities. We have seen that in the match that he played on Saturday. It was against Arsenal and they have great central defenders but still he could do that. So we have to cope with Andy Carroll and not only Andy Carroll but with other players. They have a certain player named [Dimitri] Payet – he can also play. [Manuel] Lanzini can also play and score goals.”

West Ham are enjoying a memorable campaign spearheaded by the likes of Payet and Lanzini but when you see how much impact Carroll had at the weekend, you can see their attack is far from one dimensional and it could certainly cause United some problems. Blind may have pocketed the likes of Romelu Lukaku this season but Carroll could prove difficult to contain.

United have provided little evidence in recent months to suggest they can win the FA Cup but exiting the competition would be disastrous for the club and van Gaal’s position at Old Trafford, so everything will surely be put on the line for the win.
