Anthony Martial: Louis van Gaal has helped me become a better player

Anthony Martial believes the faith placed in him by Louis van Gaal at Manchester United this season has made him a better player.

Man United decided to pay an initial £36m for the Frenchman in the summer and the fee meant he had critics before he had even kicked a ball for the club.

However, Martial, 20, has since gone on to enjoy a blistering campaign for United, scoring 13 goals in 42 games in all competitions.

When asked about the amount of playing time he has had this term, Martial said: ”It’s not something I’d really expected, but it has been very important for my development.

“The boss has shown a lot of faith in me and the fact he’s played me in so many games has allowed me to make progress and come on as a player.

“On a personal level, it [the season] has gone reasonably well.

“There are occasions when I could have done better: I could have been more clinical, scored more goals and made more assists. Now it’s down to me to keep going so I can help the team as much as I possibly can.”

Martial’s goals and assists record this season has been remarkable given his age, inexperience in the Premier League and the fact that United have struggled offensively this term.

He is already a deadly player and it will be exciting to see what he can achieve in the coming years. Van Gaal deserves credit for identifying Martial’s talent and bringing him in.
